رواية \"الشيخ يعقوب\" محاكاة درامية لقصة حياة رائد المسرح المصري والصحافة الساخرة (الكاريكاتيور) يعقوب صنوع والمنشورة في صحفه، تدور أحداثها في الفترة (1870-1878) وهي فترة شهدت أحداث تاريخية هامة ومؤثرة في تاريخ مصر المحروسة كحرب الحبشة وحرب البلقان قرض بنك أوبنهايم المشؤوم كفاح مصر لاستقلالها عن السلطنة العثمانية وكفاح مصر للحصول على موافقة أوروبية بالمحاكم المختلطة والسخرة، ووقع ذلك وتأثيره على الطبقة المثقفة المعارضة ويمثلها يعقوب صنوع في هذا العمل والتي كانت قد بدأت تتشكل في ذاك الوقت بعد عودة العديد من طلاب البعثات الخارجية وبداية حرية الصحافة وبداية عصر جديد في تاريخ مصر في عهد الخديوي إسماعيل وتأثير صحف صنوع مثل أبو نظارة وغيرها على الشارع المصري.
