يحاول د. يوسف محمود العناتي في هذا الكتاب أن يبين أن للغة العربية نظامها الخاص الذي يعكس رقيها وثراؤها، هذا النظام الذي يقوم على النسق الصوتي في النطق، ثم النسق الصرفي، والنسق النحوي في الإبانة والإعراب. ويعرض لأبرز التحديات التي واجهت اللغة العربية قديما وحديثا، مثلا : ازدواجية اللغة بين البيت والمدرسة، وانتشار الأمية في العالم العربي ومزاحمة اللغات الأخرى للعربية في الدراسة والاقتصاد والمجتمع من خلال العولمة، والتحدي الإملائي والكتابي، وأسباب التأخر القرائي والكتابي، ومحاولات التفريط بالحرف العربي وقواعد اللغة، ويقابلها في الاتجاه الآخر التزمت والتشدد في عدم الميل للتجديد في اللغة.
