تندرج هذه الدراسة في سياق الاحتجاج بمركزية (كتاب سيبويه) في تأسيس النظرية النحوية العربية في مستوى النظر والاستشهاد بالشعر، إذ يعد هذا السفر النفيس أول كتاب ألف في نحو العربية فمؤلفه هو شيخ النحويين جميعا، وكل مألف بعده إلى يوم الناس هذا لا يقدم ولا يؤخر كثيرا، فهي تدور في فلكه شرحا لمتنه أو لأبياته أو اختصارا وتهذيبا، فالنظرية في كتب النحويين هي نظريته، والشواهد هي شواهده ؛ ولذا قيل : من أراد أن يصنف كتابا كبيرا في النحو بعد (كتاب سيبويه) فليستح. ولما كان هذا الكتاب بهذه المنزلة فإن الباحث أثر يتناول شواهد سيبويه الشعرية التي وجد فيها إشكالا يستدعي المناقشة والنظر، مستعينا بما قاله خدام الكتاب من شراح المتن كالسرافي والرماني والفارسي أو ممن شرحوا الأبيات كابن السيرافي والأعلم وابن خلف، ومستفيدا مما قاله النحويون كافة.
