هذا الكتاب هو رسالة فلسفية صغيرة وبسيطة في دراسة النفس الإنسانية وماهيتها، وخلال صفحاته يستعرض الفيلسوف والعالم الموسوعي الشهير الأب المسيحي «ابن العبري» بعضا من آراء الفلاسفة اليونانيين في طبيعة النفس وجوهرها وأثرها في أفعالنا، فيؤيد بعض هذه الآراء ويرفض بعضها، ويقدم بعضا من أفكاره ورؤيته التي نجدها متأثرة بشكل كبير بخلفيته الثقافية المسيحية وذلك في لغة بسيطة سهلة لم تعجز عن أن تطرح تساؤلات فلسفية مهمة وعميقة في فصول صغيرة عن وجود النفس وأفعالها، وأين تذهب بعد الموت، وهل هي خالدة أم تفنى مع موت الجسد. يجدر ذِكر أن الفضل في نشر هذا الكتاب واستنقاذه من بين أرفف الكتب المنسية يعود إلى القس «بولس سباط»، الذي حصل على الكتاب مخطوطا وأعاد نشره ليصل إلينا.
