يقول مانع سعيد العتيبة أنه لقد جاءتني فكرة جمع مواد هذا الكتاب \"مقالات بترولية\" حرصا مني على تسجيل بعض الأفكار والآراء التي تعالج مواقف بترولية معينة. فهذا الكتاب إذن مجموعة منتقاة من المقالات والمحاضرات التي سبق أن كتبتها أو القيتها في مناسبات وأماكن مختلفة ، فيما بين 1969 و1981، رأيت أنها تقدم للقارئ الكريم سجلا لأهم الأحداث البترولية التي تمت خلال هذه المدة . كما أنها تعطي له نوعا من التصور لبعض جوانب السياسة البترولية في المستقبل. ولقد حرصت في عرض هذه المقالات والمحاضرات على ترتيبها الزمني حتى تكون سجلا تاريخيا للتطورات التي وقعت في مجال البترول.
