باحثة من العالم الثالث تتحدث عن مشكلاته كما تعيشها وتدرسها على الواقع في مناطق متباعدة جغرافيا وسكانيا، منها الهند والصين، أندونيسيا وأمريكا اللاتينية وغيرها ... وتحاول أن تحيط بمجمل أسباب ظاهرة التخلف المعقدة . فثمة الجذور التاريخية، الصراع الطبقي وعلائق الطبقات ببعضها، الرأسمالية والاستثمار الاستعماري، علائق الريف بالمدينة. وأيضا تداول اليد العاملة، حركة رؤوس الأموال، النمو السكاني ... وأخيرا الدولة التي يتزايد دورها في العالم الثالث حيث تتصدى اليوم للاستعمار والرأسمالية. وتنوع المؤلفة الأساليب، ومنها الماركسية، وغيرها. الهام عندها هو العينات التي تدرس كلا منها عرضايا، أي في مجمل العلائق الاجتماعية كما تبدو على أرض الواقع، وطولايا إذ تحاول المؤلفة النفاذ إلى الجذور الأولى لهذه العلائق.
