أرسل قاسم أمين صيحة مدوية حارة لتحرير المرأة فى مجتمع بلغ الدرك الأسفل من التأخر حيث عرقلت تقدمه تقاليد عتيقة، ولم يكن مهيئا لتقبل أية دعوة من دعوات الإصلاح، وقد أدرك أن علة العلل في تأخير المجتمع الشرقي : جهل المرأة وحجبها عن النور فقال : عاشت المرأة فى انحطاط شديد أيا كان عنوانها : زوجة أو أما أو بنتا... ليس، لها شأن خاضعة للرجل لأنه رجل فني شخصها في شخصه ولم يبق لها من الكون ما يسعها إلا ما استتر من زوايا المنزل. حديث جرئ ونظرة نفاذة في صميم الأوضاع والثقافية للمرأة المصرية آنذاك الكاتب بأسلوب حي وألوان نابضة تشعرك وكأنه قد انتهى من كتابه هذا بالأمس فقط.
