شکلت دراسات سمير أمين حول العالم الثالث وعلاقة الغرب بالشرق في التاريخ والاقتصاد والبنى إسهاما متقدما مقارنة بالوضع السابق للبحوث حول هذه المسألة التي تمس التاريخ الاقتصادي والاجتماعي والأنتربولوجيا والأتنولوجيا. لكن الإسهام المذكور بقى في حدود حصر سمير أمين نفسه داخلها بسبب من طبيعة المنهج المسبق الذي فرضه على نفسه في محاولة لاستحداث ما يمكن تسميته : ماركسية للعالم الثالث أو ماركسية شرقية.
