أبو العلاء المعري، والذي كثيرا ما أحاط به الغموض، فقد نبت في الغموض، وشد حول ذاته هالات كثيفة من التعمية في قصد، وفي غير قصد، والمؤلف عبدالله العلايلي يحاول في كتابه هذا فهم المعري ذلك المجهول ويستند في ذلك إلى استخلاص طريقته التي تمكنه من الوصول إليه والنفوذ إلى أغوار فلسفته، لذا دأب المؤلف في محاولته لإبانة الطريقة النظرية عند المعري قبل أي اعتبار، ثم مضى في محاولة شرحه وعرضه.
