لقد بدأ اسم ألبير كامو يذيع في الأوساط الأدبية بعد الحرب العالمية الثانية كما كان ذائعا إبان حركة المقاومة السرية بوصفه شابا نشيطا مقاتلا ومديرا لجريدة كومبا، فضلا عن كونه كاتب الرواية القصيرة المشهورة \"الغريب\" التي نشرت عام 1942، ولم يمض وقت حتى أصبح كل كتاب يكتبه حدثا أدبيا يتوقعونه ويستقبلونه بحرارة في باريس ليناقشوه أو يهاجموه.
