يبحث هذه الكتاب في فكرة الزمان المقدس والزمان المدنس أو العادي، من خلال أحد أبرز المفكرين المعاصرين وهو (ميرسيا الياد)، الذي حاول أن يبين بأن الزمان عند الإنسان المتدين يعرف نوعين من الزمن (المقدس والدنيوي)، وأفضلهم هو الزمن المقدس، حيث يمكن للإنسان إعادته وتكراره بشكل دوري، عن طريق الاحتفال به، بواسطة الطقوس والأساطير، كما يمكن أيضا إعادة تحيينه عن طريق المشاركة الدينية، من خلال عيد من الأعياد، وهذا يشكل جزءا من التجربة الدينية للأفراد والجماعات.
