إن كتابنا هذا هو عبارة عن رسالة لطيفة في مبادئ الصرف، حسنة التنسيق والترتيب، مع بساطة ووضوح في التعبير، مشتملة على أهم ما يجب على الطالب أن يعرفه من قواعد هذا الفن، وقد اقتبس المؤلف بعض فوائدها من جملة كتب مشهورة في التصريف، وأضاف إلى ذلك عدة جداول صرفية ليسهل على الطلاب استظهارها، وأرفقها بأسئلة كثيرة للإجابة عنها كتابة ومشافهة ليعلم هل فهموا الدرس أم لا، كما اقتصر فيها على تصريف الأفعال بالخصوص، وذلك لأن تصريف الأسماء قد تكفل به غالب كتب النحو. هذا وقد قام المعتني خلال عمله على الكتاب بتشكيل ما يحتاج إلى ذلك من الكلمات مع إضافة ترجمة للمؤلف.
