روي عن رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم أنه قال: \"الحكمة ضالة المؤمن أني وجدها أخذ بها\"، والضالة هي الشيء المفقود، فكما أن الذي فقد شيئا ثمينا فإنه يبحث عنه ولا يهنأ له بال حتى يجده، فكذلك المؤمن يحرص على نيل الحكمة وطلبها وعلى النهل من معينها. وبناء على هذا الحديث الشريف فقد جمع هذا البحث كل الأشعار التي تتعلق بشعر الحكمة في الجاهلية، أما عن المنهج الذي اتبعه المؤلف في اختيار وانتقاء الأبيات التي تحتوي على حكمة فكان باختيار الأبيات التي تحوي (من) الشرطية، فهي تفيد الحكم والأحكام العامة، وأيضا الأبيات التي تحتوي على كلمات ككلمة (امرو) وكلمة (فتى) وكلمة (الدهر)، والوصايا التي تكون عادة من المعمرين وأبيات الحكمة هي التي تكون مصوغة على الطريقة الخبرية، أي تحتمل الصدق والكذب، والأبيات التي تنبئ عن تجربة حياتية والتي تتضمن كلمات كـ : (أرى) أو (أظن)
