إن من أجل الكتب في علم مصطلح الحديث، هو كتاب \"الموقظة\" للإمام الذهبي (المتوفى سنة 748هـ)، وهو كتاب مختصر بالغ الإفادة، وتظهر أهميته في أن الإمام الذهبي له تعليقات فيه على من سبقه، وهذه التعليقات صادرة عن علم من أعلام الحديث، ليس كغيره ممن سلف. وكذلك تظهر أهمية هذا الكتاب في بعض المباحث التي أوردها المؤلف ولم يسبق إليها، وبخاصة ما كان منها متعلقا في علم الرجال، فله مباحث في علم الرجال وفي طبقات الحفاظ لا تجدها في كتاب من كتب مصطلح الحديث إلا في هذا الكتاب، ووجودها فيه يزداد أهمية لكونها صادرة عن إمام له عناية تامة بعلم الرجال والطبقات ؛ حتى شهد له الأئمة الحفاظ بذلك.
