هذا الكتاب يحكي عن لير ملك بريطانيا الأسطوري عاش شبابه فارس من أقوى الفرسان وعندما تقدم به السن قرر تقسيم ملكه بين بناته الثلاث (جنريل) و(ريجان) و(كردليا) ثم طلب من بناته الثلاث أن يعبرن عن حبهن له فقالت لة جنريل انا احبك متل زبدة البحر وقالت لة ريجان أنا أحبك كعدد البشر ولكن لم تتملق ابنته الثالثة في مدحه كما فعلت الاخوات الكبريات فقلت له أنا أحبك مثل الأشخاص الذين يحبون والدهم وبعده غضب عليها لير ظنا منه أنها لا تحبه لذلك طردها من مملكته بلا شي ولكن تزوجها ملك فرنسا بقوله أنها لا تطمع بشيء من المال لذلك هو من سوف يتزوجها.
