يعد كتاب مقاتل الطالبيين \"لأبي فرج الأصفهاني\" كنز من كنوز الأدب والتاريخ ترجم فيه أبو الفرج للشهداء من ذرية أبي طالب منذ عصر رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم إلى الوقت الذي شرع يؤلف فيه كتابه، واقتصر على من كان نقي السيدة قويم المذهب، وأعرض عن ذكر من عدل عن سنن آبائه وحاد عن مذاهب أسلافه وكان مصرعه في سبيل أطماعه وجزاء ما اجترحت يداه من عيث وإفساد. وقد صنف أبو الفرج أخبارهم، ونظم سيرهم، ورصف مقاتلهم، وجلى قصصهم بأسلوبه الساحر، وبيانه الآسر وطريقته الفذة في حسن العرض، ومهارته الفائقة في سبك القصة، وحبك نسجها، وائتلاف أصباغها وألوانها، وتسلسل فكرتها، ووحدة ديباجتها، وتساوق نصاعتها، على اختلاف رواتها وتعدد روايتها وتباين طرقها، حتى لتبدو وكأنها بنات فكر واحد وهذا هو سر الصنعة في أدب أبي الفرج الأصفهاني.
