إن من أقدم ما صنف في السيرة \"كتاب السير\" فلإمام الأعظم أبي حنيفة النعمان بن ثابت الكوني رضي الله عنه، أملاه على الصحابة، فرووه عنه، وزادوا فيه ورتبوه، وهذبوه حتى نسب إليهم والسير: جمع سيره وبه سمي كتبا السير : لأنه بين فيه سيرة المسلمين في العامة مع المشركين من أهل الحرب، ومع أهل الحرب، ومع أهل العهد منهم من المستأمنين وأهل الذمة، ومع المرتدين، ومع أهل البغي الذين حالهم حال المشتركين. ولما وقع السير الصغير بيد أبي عمر عبد الرحمن الأوزاعي إمام الشام فنظر فيه قال: لمن هذا الكتاب فقيل \"لمحمد العراقي\"، فقال \"ما لأهل العراق والتصنيف في هذا الباب! فإنه لأعلم لهم بالسير ومغازي رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم وأصحابه كانت من جانب الشام والحجاز دون العراق، فإنها محدثة فتحا.
