Overview
أسس الخليفة العباسي الثاني أبو جعفر المنصور مدينة السلام في سنة 145 هـ لتكون مقرا له ولحرسه وجنده وحاشيته، ولكنها سرعان ما نمت وأصبحت أكبر الحواضر الإسلامية وأعظم مراكز الحركة الفكرية والحياة الاقتصادية في العالم الإسلامي، بل والعالم كله. ولم يؤثر على مكانتها اتخاذ سبعة من الخلفاء العباسيين مقرهم من سامراء، بل كما يقول اليعقوبي في ذلك \"لم تخرب بغداد ولا نقصت اسواقها\" لانهم لم يجدوا منها عوضا وقد ظلت بغداد محتفظة بهذا المركز المرموق حتى الربع الأول من القرن الرابع الهجري حيث أصابها ما أدى إلى تدهور أحوالها، كما أدى إلى تدهور أحوال العراق، ثم عادت في القرن السادس الهجري إلى الانتعاش من جديد، ولكنها لم تفقد خلال ذلك مركزها كقاعدة للخلافة كما لم تمت فيها الحركة الفكرية .
