في هذا الكتاب يقدم المؤلف وهو رحالة عاش في جنوب العراق من نهاية 1951 حتى حزيران 1958، يقدم صورة حية عن الأهوار وعن الناس الذين يعيشون هناك مستعينا بذكرياته وما يدعمها من يومياته المدونة. وهو لا يدعي أنه قدم دراسة مفصلة عن سكان الأهوار لأن المنطقة التي غطتها رحلاته كانت محدودة. وهو يروي قصة إبحاره في مناطق الأهوار الشرقية سافرا إلى أقاصي المنطقة.
