يتحدث المؤلف عن شعر النابغة وحياته ونشاطه السياسي القبلي في بلاط غسان والحيرة، وموقف قبيلة النابغة من القبائل الأخرى المعادية والمجالفة وذلك بهدف الكشف عن جذور هذه العلاقة في الحروب التي كانت تنشأ بين غسان والحيرة، وكذلك بين غسان وذبيان من مناوشات وحروب. هذا، وقد تم إلحاق الكتاب بدراسة عن موضوع الوحدة في القصيدة العربية في الجاهلية، وفيها استعرض المؤلف آراء العقاد وشوقي وحافظ ومحاورة للدكتور طه حسين حول أسباب أدت بالمحدثين من النقاد إلى إنكار الوحدة في الشعر القديم.
