يتناول كتاب (فنتازيا الغريزة) والذي قام بتأليفه د. هـ. لورانس، موضوع (الغريزة) الكتاب يعتقد مؤلفه أن اللاوعي هو بشكل أو بآخر جذر العقل والأفكار الواعية، وهو ما كان يعتبر فكرة بديهية لدى الحضارات الإنسانية الأولى. ويفسر ذلك مكانة الكهنة في تلك المجتمعات وقد انتقلت تلك المكانة لطبقة أخرى مع قدوم الحضارة الحديثة حيث انتقلت للعلماء والفزيائيين ممثلوا العصر الحديث، وفي كلا الحالتين كانت تفسيرات الكون حكرا على طبقة معينة. أما الغريزة والميتافيزيقا فهي موزعة بشكل ما لدى جميع البشر ولأجلها يبنون الحضارات ويكتبون الشعر وتخرج الفنون. ربما عبروا عن ذلك سابقا بشكل بدائي، ولكنهم بالتأكيد فقدوا الكثير حينما تخلوا عن تلك الغرائز البدائية لصالح الحضارة الحديثة.
