الكتاب يقدم قراءة في أنواع المتاحف ومعايير تصنيفها وفق منهجية قياسية ؛ بداية بتحديد معايير قياسية للتصنيف قياسا على تعريف المتحف، وآثار التطور التاريخي للمتاحف في تشكيل الصورة الكاملة لكل نوع من أنواعها، مرورا بتفنيد التصنيفات غير القياسية تفنيدا علميا ومنهجيا، وصولا إلى تحديد ستة معايير قياسية يمكن تصنيف المتاحف بموجبها، مع جواز تصنيف المتحف لأكثر من نوع وفقا لمعايير مختلفة، ثم ينتقل العمل تدريجيا إلى التعريف بكافة أنواع المتاحف، ورصد تاريخ نشأتها وتطورها بالصور التي تشكل واقع المتحف في الحاضر، كما استشهد لكل نوع من أنواع المتاحف بأمثلة لمتاحف مختلفة في الوطن العربي، وحول العالم لتقريب الصورة الذهنية حول هذه الأنواع.
