إن مسألة الجبر والاختيار مسألة قديمة في تاريخ الحضارة الإسلامية، ثار حولها الجدل منذ أواخر عصر الصحابة واتساع الفتوحات، ثم استمر وتطاول حتى يوم الناس هذا. وهي مسألة شائكة معقدة ضاعت فيها فرق وضلت و تطرفت فرق أخرى إلى أقصى الطرفين، ثم انتهى الأمر ببعضهم إلى أنها من الأسرار، في حين اتخذها جماعة مدخلا لبث الريب في قلوب المؤمنين. ولقد شغلت مؤلف الكتاب هذه القضية الحساسة منذ حين طويل، وتناولها في أحاديثه الإعلامية ومجالسه العامة وعالجها حتى توصل إلى قناعة فيها نضجت لديه معتمدا على الكتاب والسنة، وما اهتمامه بذلك إلا لخشيته على فساد العقيدة لدى المسلمين عامة وشبابهم خاصة ؛ إذ لا تنفع الأعمال الصالحة مهما جلت مع انحراف الإيمان. الكتاب وقفة متأنية، كتبه الدكتور البوطي رئيس قسم العقائد والأديان بجامعة دمشق، بما عرف عنه من سلاسة العبارة والعرض المشوق.
