يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى التعريف بأهم النصوص الأدبية لثقافات الشرق القديم، من أساطير وملاحم وحكم وأمثال وتراتيل وصلوات، وما إليها. وقد زاد المؤلف عليها عددا من الدراسات التي تلقي الضوء على هذا الأدب وتساعد على فهمه وتذوقه. بعض هذه النصوص تم تقديمها بنصها الكامل، وبعضها الآخر من خلال مقاطع تعبر عن روحها ومقاصد مؤلفيها، لا سيما عندما تكون الرقم الفخارية غير واضحة تماما للقراءة بسبب الكسور والتشوهات الحاصلة فيها، وعلى الرغم من أن المؤلف قد أرفق نصوصه بشروح وتحليلات، إلا أنه أبقى ذلك في الحد الأدنى الضروري الذي لا يؤدي إلى ملل القارئ غير المتمرس، آملا في الوقت نفسه تزويد الباحثين في مجالات العلوم الإنسانية الأخرى بما يفيدهم من شواهد تغنيهم عن الرجوع إلى أمهات المراجع العالمية التي استند إليها.
