هذا الكتاب هو سلسلة محاضرات ألقاها ليوتار لطلابه في السوربون في مرحلتهم الأولى ولذلك سعى لأن يكون واضحا وموجزا في الوقت نفسه فقدم تأملا عميقا في أهمية أن نتفلسف في عالم تعتبر فيه الفلسفة معزولة عن الواقع وعفى عليها الزمان أو أنها غير مقنعة أصلا ومنها في المحاضرة الأولى يرسم ليوتار ملامح عامة لأفلاطون وبروست وليوضح أن الفلسفة هي رغبة غير منتهية للوصول إلى الحكمة وإلى الآخر وفي المحاضرة الثانية يتحدث عن هراقليطس وهيجل ليشرح الصلة العميقة بين الفلسفة والتاريخ فكلاهما يحركهما القلق نفسه والتطلع ذاته إلى الوحدة غير المستقرة.
