إذا أراد باحث أن يتصدى لدراسة تاريخ العراق الحديث، ويؤرخ لثورة العشرين خاصة، فلا بد أن يتطرق إلى ذكر شاعر هذه الثورة وخطيبها محمد مهدي البصير. لما له من دور كبير في التحضير لها وتأجيج لهيبها بشعره وخطبه. وقد عرفته أجيال هذا القرن شاعرا وطنيا ثائرا، وخطيبا مصقعا، ومؤرخا أرخ أحداث العراق في عصره، وباحثا له مؤلفات عدة في الأدب وتاريخه، وناقدا له آراؤه النقدية، وأستاذا مربيا خرج المئات، بل الآلاف من مربي هذا الجيل. فالبصير علم من أعلام العراق في عصرنا الحديث، وعنصر من عناصر الثورة العراقية الكبرى 1920م، وشخصية وطنية فذة، له تاريخ حافل بالنضال الوطني والقومي على مدى أكثر من عقد من الثلث الأول من هذا القرن. وقد أزدهی به تاريخ الحركة الوطنية في العراق.
