يقول الأديب والشاعر شفيق جبري في مقدمة كتابه هذا : كتب لي أن أرحل إلى أميركا رحلتين : الأولى سنة 1953 والثانية سنة 1956م. ولقد جلت في مناكب أرضها من الشرق إلى الغرب ومن الشمال إلى الجنوب، فنعمت بكثير من مشاهد طبيعتها، وأنست بكثير من جامعاتها، ووقفت على خصائص الأميركان في آفاق تفكيرهم واجتماعهم وعملهم، وأطلعت على طائفة من مجهوداتهم في مقاومة الطبيعة بعد مقاومة الهنود، وكنت أدون كل يوم ما توحيه إلي هذه الأمور حتى نشأ هذا الكتاب الذي سميته : أرض السحر، وشرحت في بعض فصوله السبب في هذه التسمية، فإذا استطاع القارئ الكريم أن يرى في تضاعيفه ما أبقته الرحلة في نفسي من مختلف الآثار التي أعربت عنها جريا على الطبع وحده وبعدا عن أي تكلف وإيثارا لكل تجرد فقد ظفرت بما أردت.
