إن الرؤية البصرية بالنسبة لصانعي السينما هي ضرورة. والشيء نفسه ينطبق على الفنانين التشكيليين. ولكن في حين يهتم الرسام باكتشاف حقيقة ساكنة أو لنقل إيقاعا ما، حتى ولو كان هذا الإيقاع ثابتا، يعاني المخرج من مشكلة كيفية الإمساك بالشيء وهو في طور حركته ثم تقديم تلك الحركة, ذلك الكر والفر، الزيادة والنقصان بمفهوم جديد. والمسألة ليست مسألة صورة أو منظر طبيعي، أو موقف، أو حركة، إنما هي كل لا يتجزأ يغطي فترة من الزمن يخترقها يتغلغل فيها ويحدد روحها ومعانيها. هنا تأخذ أبعاد الزمن بأكثر معانيها حداثة، دورها الحقيقي.
