أصبح فرنسوا تروفو خلال مهنته التي امتدت زهاء 25 سنة، أنجز خلالها 21 فيلما روائيا طويلا من أكثر صناع الأفلام الفرنسيين شعبية في زمنه. كما ذاع صيته ولاقى إعجابا كبيرا في الولايات المتحدة وبريطانيا واليابان فاق الإعجاب الذي ناله في بلده الأم، كما اعتبره الأمريكيون أنه يمثل السينما الفرنسية بوجه عام. وجسدها في نظر عشاق السينما الأمريكيين تماما كما كان فديريكو فيلليني بالنسبة إليهم يمثل السينما الإيطالية وإنغمار بيرغمان يمثل السينما الإسكندنافية. لقد حقق تروفو هذه المكانة كسفير ثقافي لبلاده في أمريكا مع أن هذه الصفة مشكوك بصحتها، بالرغم من طبيعة أفلامه المؤلفة من عناصر مستمدة من مصادر انتقائية سواء في الأسلوب أو في الموضوع بالإضافة إلى رفضه اتباع التيارات السائدة أو الأساليب الشائعة في ذلك الوقت.
