هذا الكتاب هو قصة ولد الياباني ظروف عمل والدته إلى الانفصال عنها، فكانت المراسلة هي طريقة التواصل الوحيدة بينهما طوال عشر سنوات، أنهى فيها الولد تحصيله الثانوي والممتع في هذه الرسائل التي نبودلت فعلا أنها سجل يومي لوقائع حياة ولد ياباني نبيه من الطبقة العاملة اجتاز وحيدا تجربة الحرب العالمية الثانية مما اضطره إلى الاهتمام بكل ما يجري حوله وتسجيل ردود فعله عليه بحيث ان مجموع رسائله وأجوبة والدته تشكل لوحة نابضة بالحياة عن مرحلة هي بدون شك أخطر مرحلة مرت بها اليابان على الخصوص بعد قنبلة هيروشيما فالكتاب ببساطة أسلوبه وعفويته يتوجه لا إلى الصغار وحدهم بل لكل إنسان يكافح فعلا في سبيل رطنه أين راني وجد.
