ولد المشهد السينمائي ذات مساء من شهر كانون الأول من عام 1895. ثم سرعان ما لبثت صناعة السينما أن تطورت، حتى قبل أن يتم تكريس هذه السينما كفن. إن تاريخ السينما الفرنسية إذن، هو تاريخ تسلية شعبية وصناعة وفن. للتمكن من تبيان ذلك، فإن هذا الكتاب يحاول أن برسم ثانية الخطوط العريضة لمغامرة الفن السابع. ويذكر نشوء شركات الإنتاج وظهور المخرجين الكبار من ميلييس وبيالا وغاريل، مرورا بليربيه وبروسون وغودار إلى فيغو وكلير ورينوار. فمن خلال هذا الفيض من الأعمال يمكننا أن نؤرخ السينما الفرنسية. ومن أهم ما تحدث عنه الكتاب : زمن السينما الصامتة 1896-1929، من السينما الفرنسية الناطقة إلى السينما ذات الخصوصية العالية 1929-1958، الموجة الجديدة وما بعدها، السينما النسبية 1975-1994.
