يواكب هذا الكتاب المشكلة السورية منذ نشأتها، مسجلا مراحل تطورها خطوة فخطوة، ليتحول بذلك إلى مرجع شامل يحيط بجوانبها كلها. لا تنظر الكاتبة إلى المسألة السورية من زاوية محلية خالصة، بل بصفتها نقطة اشتباك بين مصالح الدول المنخرطة فيها، وبصفتها مرآة تعكس من جانب رفض عدد من الدول نظام القطبية الأحادية الذي ساد بعد انتهاء الحرب الباردة، وتعكس من جانب آخر تنامي دور الدول الإقليمية في حل الأزمات الناشئة وازدياد قدراتها على الدفاع عن مصالحها بقوة، ثم تحاول في ضوء ذلك استعراض الدور الروسي في حل عقدة التناقضات المتكونة عن ذلك.
