هناك أسباب كثيرة تدفع النظم الاقتصادية-الاجتماعية للتعارض وتجعل كل نظام ملحوظا بالتطور والتغير ومن ثم بالزوال عن مسرح التاريخ. إذ لا يمكن أن يوجد نظام أو أن يعيد انتاج نفسه خارج حدود معينة ولا يمكن أن يمر بتحولات لا تتوافق مع الأبعاد غير الواعية، وكان هدف البحث الإجابة عن سؤالين هما في حقيقتهما سؤال واحد : ما هو معنى عقلانية النظم الاقتصادية التي تظهر وتختفي على امتداد التاريخ، أو بتعبير آخر، ما هو منطقها الداخلي وأي ضرورة كامنة دفعتها وتدفعها إلى الظهور ؟ وما الشروط اللازمة للتوصل إلى فهم عقلاني لتلك النظم، أي لقيام علم اقتصاد مقارن مكتمل النضوج ؟.
