يتضمن هذا الكتاب مقدمة مربعة عن حياة فردريك إنجلز وتعاونه مع كارل ماركس في وضع أسس الاشتراكية العلمية، ونضاله في صفوف الحركة العمالية. ويلي ذلك نصوص مختارة من أهم مؤلفات إنجلز، تتناول الموضوعات التي عالجها كلها، ومنها بشكل خاص : 1. المبادئ الأساسية للشيوعية-2. نظرية الثورة التي ستنقل المجتمع الإنساني من النظام الرأسمالي إلى النظام الاشتراكي-3. أصول المادية التاريخية-4. أصول المادية الجدلية-5. منشأ الأسرة والملكية الخاصة-6. نظرية الأدب الماركسية-7. تطبيقات الماركسية على فهم بعض الأحداث التاريخية فهو من هذا القبيل إحاطة، عبر النصوص، بمجمل فلسفة إنجلز المادية. وقد قدم واضع المختارات لكل نص بشرح صغير يضع هذا النص في إطاره العام.. فالكتاب يتوجه إلى الأخصائي وإلى القارئ العادي. وقد وفق المترجم إلى صيانة فكر إنجلز بأسلوب عربي متين ومترابط بحيث ينسبك أنه مترجم.
