تتقصى الدراسة تسميات المهاهاة المختلفة المتداولة في أنحاء بلاد الشام، استنادا إلى وفرة من النصوص، المستمدة من المراجع والبحث الميداني. وتبحث في جذورها التاريخية، التي ترجع إلى الرجز القديم، وبالأخص ما قالته النساء من أرجاز حماسية يوم (ذي قار)، وهتفت به نساء قريش يوم (أحد)، ولا تختلف أرجاز النساء في أيامنا، عن تلك الأرجاز في شيء عدا اللهجة، فالفن نفسه ما زال حيا متجددا. والغاية من هذه الدراسة الوصول إلى مفاهيم محددة يطمأن إليها، وتحديد التسمية المناسبة الأكثر دقة لهذا الفن، وتمييزها من غيرها من الفنون الشعرية الشعبية.
