يعد الطبيب والعالم العربي السوري علاء الدين ابن أبي الحزم القرشي الدمشقي، المعروف بابن النفيس الدمشقي (687 هـ.-1228 م.) ، صفحة مشرقة في تاريخ التراث العلمي العربي والعالمي، وقد نال شهرة كبيرة تجاوزت عصره وزمانه بفضل مؤلفاته الكثيرة وتجاربه وتصانيفه المهمة، واكتشافه الدورة الدموية الصغرى، فاتحا بذلك الطريق إلى تحولات عميقة في مفهوم العلاج الطبي وتركيب العقاقير وطب العيون وغير ذلك.
