ينقسم الكتاب إلى خمسة فصول تناول الفصل الأول منها الهيمنة في المدارس الفكرية للعلاقات الدولية (المدرسة الواقعية-المدرسة الليبرالية-والهيمنة في البنائية الاجتماعية) بينما تناول الفصل الثاني مراحل تطور الهيمنة الأميركية (التقليدية-أثناء الحرب الباردة-ومرحلة ما بعد الحرب الباردة) أما مؤسسات الهيمنة الأميركية خصص لها الفصل الثالث وهي مؤسسات اقتصادية (صندوق النقد الدولي-البنك الدولي-منظمة التجارة العالمية) وأخرى مؤسسات سياسية وأمنية : (حلف الشمال الأطلسي (حلف الناتو)-منظمة الأمم المتحدة-منظمات المجتمع المدني). وبحث الفصل الرابع في وسائل الهيمنة الأميركية(السياسية-الأمنية-الاقتصادية-والعسكرية) ويأتي الفصل الخامس والأخير في الآفاق المستقبلية للهيمنة الأميركية ويبحث في الأطر الفكرية المناقشة لمستقبل الهيمنة الأمريكية ومنها (أطروحة نشوء وسقوط القوى العظمى لبول كيندي وأطروحة نهاية التاريخ لفرانسيس فوكوياما).
