هذا الكتاب جهد مشترك، بدأه العلامة خير الدين الأسدي بمخطوطة صغيرة تقع في 45 صفحة، اطلعت عليها فوجدت أنها مشروع أولي لابد من إتمامه. إن تسجيل هذه الأحياء، وتحديد موقعها، ووصفها، والتحقيق في سبب تسميتها أصبح ضروريا بعد أن أخذت يد الهدم والتغيير تعمل فيها. وكان لابد بالإضافة إلى المصادر الخطية والطبعية من القيام برحلات ميدانية واسعة والعودة إلى مخططات البلدية لتحديد الأحياء وجمع المعلومات عنها.
