يتحدث الفصل الأول ويقول الكاتب أن أبرز ظاهرة اجتماعية في المنطقة العربية هي ظاهرة الصراع بين الحضارة والبداوة وهذا الصراع يختلف في نمطه وشدة تفاعله من منطقة لأخرى فمنها ما تسيطر عليه الحضارة تارة والبداوة تارة أخرى ومنها ما تكون البداوة هي الأشد تأثيرا ومنها ما يغلب عليه طابع الحضارة وعلى ذلك يبحث الكاتب في الفصل الثاني عن ماهية البداوة ويطرح فرضية هي أن محور الثقافة البدوية أو طابعها العام يقوم على \"التغالب\" وفي الفصل الثالث والرابع يتحدث عن البداوة ونزعة الحرب وأعماق الثقافة البدوية في باقي الفصول يدرس تأثير صراع البداوة والحضارة على المجتمع العراقي بشكل خاص.
