Overview
كان أول يوم في العام الميلادي الجديد، حين أعلنت ثلاثة مراصد فلكية في الوقت ذاته تقريبا أن كوكب نبتون-أبعد الكواكب التي تدور حول الشمس- صارت حركته مضطربة للغاية. اكتشف علماء الفلك لاحقا وجود بقعة ضئيلة وبعيدة من الضوء الخافت في نطاق الكوكب المضطرب، ثم اكتشفوا بعد بضعة أيام أن هذا الجرم الجديد يزداد حجما وضياء، وأن حركته تختلف تماما عن حركة الكواكب المنتظمة. عالم رياضيات واحد فقط أدرك ما وراء هذه التغيرات العجيبة في النظام الشمسي، وتنبأ بالكارثة التي يحملها ذلك «النجم» القادم. سيمر النجم قريبا جدا من كوكب الأرض، وربما يصطدم به مباشرة ؛ وستكون النتيجة زلازل وبراكين وأعاصير وفيضانات تجتاح أنحاء الأرض كلها، ولا أحد يستطيع أن يقدر حجم الأضرار، التي ربما تصل إلى حد فناء البشر. فهل ستتحقق نبوءة هذا العالم؟ وهل سيفنى كوكب الأرض أم سينجو من هذا المصير الرهيب؟
