في هذا العمل الكلاسيكي، الذي غالبا ما يوصف بأنه تاريخ صعود وانحدار وسقوط علاقة الحب، يستكشف دينيس دي روجيمونت سيكولوجية الحب من أسطورة تريستان وإيزولد إلى هوليوود. في قلب استفساره الدائم الصلة يكمن الصراع الذي لا مفر منه في الغرب بين الزواج والعاطفة الأول مرتبط بالمسؤولية الاجتماعية والدينية والثاني بحب فوضوي غير قابل للإرضاء كما يحتفل به متروبو بروفانس في العصور الوسطى، هؤلاء الشعراء الأوائل، حسب دي روجيمونت، تحدثوا بكلمات لاهوتية متمركزة حول إيروس، ومن خلال هذه البدعة ازدهرت مفردات التصوف الأوروبية واتخذ الأدب الغربي اتجاها جديدا، من خلال الجمع بين الأبعاد التاريخية والدينية والفلسفية والثقافية، يتتبع المؤلف تطور الحب الرومانسي الغربي منذ بداياته الأدبية باعتباره سرا مذهلا لتسويقه في السينما، يسعى إلى إعادة أسطورة الحب إلى سلامتها الأصلية ويختتم بمنظور فلسفي حول الزواج الحديث.
