في هذا الكتاب عرض الأسطورة اليونانية في نشوئها. لا في الزمان، فالأسطورة تروي الزمان والتاريخ على طريقتها ولكن في نظامها الذاتي، كما تروي قصة نشوء الكون والإنسان والتاريخ وقصة القوى الطبيعية وفوق الطبيعية التي أسهمت في هذا النشوء. اقتبس الأب بربارة كتابه عن هوميروس وهيزيدس وغيرهما ممن عاشوا الأسطورة وعبروا عنها والأب فؤاد جرجي بربارة من كبار الأخصائيين في الأدب اليوناني، فقد ترجم لليونسكو كتابين من كتب أرسطو : السياسيات ودستور الأثينيين وهو الآن يترجم لحساب وزارة الثقافة حوارين من محاورات أفلاطون : الطماوس والكريسياس.
