يقوم الكاتب رياض عصمت في هذا الكتاب بدراسة مجموعة من الشوامخ في تاريخ المسرح العالمي، قديمه وحديثه، من خلال البطل التراجيدي باعتباره شخصية وجودية، متمردة، ثورية وكأنها تجابه قوى ميتافيزيقية عابثة أو قوى اجتماعية جائرة. والتراجيدية أو المأساة، في تعريفها هي شكل من أشكال التعبير في الفن، تعكس استفحال التناقضات غير القابلة للحل في زمن معين، التناقضات بين متطلبات الفرد وصبواته والاستحالة العملية لتحقيقها، بما يؤدي إلى انفعالات ومعاناة أليمة قد تفضي إلى موت البطل، رغم ما يبذله من قدرة هائلة على مواجهة مصيره بشجاعة في التصدي للعبث الكوني والاجتماعي، ورفضه الحلول الوسطى ولو كان ذلك على حساب حياته وحياة الآخرين.
