كانت رسالة : «طوق الحمامة في الألفة والألاف» من أهم ما كتب عن الحب، ومن أدق ما صوره أديب كاتب شاعر من أحوال الحب وقضاياه، وقد غاص أبو محمد بن حزم القرطبي الأندلسي في النفس الإنسانية، ولم يبخل على القارئ ببعض أحواله وتجاربه الشخصية، ومن هنا عد الكتاب (أو الرسالة) أحد المصادر الرئيسية لسيرة ابن حزم الذاتية، وقد أورد المؤلف في الأبواب الثلاثين التي يتألف منها الكتاب قطعا وقصائد من شعره جعلها في خدمة فكرة الكتاب وتفصيلات مقاصده. وكتب ابن حزم رسالته بأسلوب أدبي مشرق يعتمد على الوضوح والقصد، وعلى الصراحة التي توصل بعض النصوص إلى الواقعية التامة. وقد ترجم الكتاب إلى لغات أجنبية كثيرة، وصار تراثا عالميا إنسانيا. وهذه الطبعة هي نسخة جديدة مقروءة قراءة متأنية للمخطوطة الوحيدة للكتاب، محققة تحقيقا علميا رصينا.
