كتاب في أجزاء ثلاثة يعرض مبوبوه من خلال ما اختاروه قضايا النقد ومشكلاته، ومبادئه وفرضياته، ومواقفه وقيمه معتمدين على نصوص لكبار النقاد القدماء والمعاصرين. ترسم هذه المختارات لوحة للفكر النقدي متكاملة من حيث الزمن، فتعرض آراء بعض النقاد الكبار القدماء ثم تلح على آراء المحدثين مراعية التسلسل. كاشفة بذلك عن جذور النقد التي تطرح عبر التاريخ مشكلات لا يختلف جوهرها قدر ما تختلف أشكالها. تتناول النصوص المختارة مصدر الفن في الجزء الأول، وشكله وغايته في الجزأين الثاني والثالث، مؤكدة أن الفارق بين هذه الأنواع الثلاثة ليس جذريا وأن الناقد لا يستطيع أن يتخذ موقفا مطلقا، وأن هذا التقسيم هو لتسهيل الدراسة فحسب.
