يهدف هذا الكتاب إلى إظهار الجانب الذاتي الإبداعي في العلم. وهذه مهمة صعبة في بلد ليس فيه مكتبات علمية متخصصة، ولاسيما أن الموضوع ذاته لا يوجد له كتاب مخصص في مكتباتنا على الأقل، والخوض فيه يحتاج إلى دراية ليس في تاريخ العلم فحسب، بل في مذكرات العلماء أنفسهم ومدوناتهم الشخصية، وهذه الوثائق غير موجودة في بلدنا، لأن علماء العصر الإسلامي لم يكونوا متفرغين للبحث العلمي وحده كما أنهم دونوا أعمالهم في طيات كتب لا يمكن بحال من الأحوال اعتبارها كتباً علمية متخصصة، اللهم إلا قلة مثل الحسن بن الهيثم وجابر بن حيان وكمال الدين الفارسي وكل من ألف كتباً في الرياضيات حصرا.
