كتاب في غاية الأهمية، يستعرض فيه السيرة الذاتية لمؤسس الحركة بروتستانتية مارتن لوثر، ووجه الأهمية تكمن تحديداً لوثر وحركته هما عنوان عصر النهضة، وانشقاق الكنيسة، وبدء نهوض القومية الألمانية، والتغيرات الكبرى في أوروبا، يستعرض الكاتب الصراعات السياسية والاجتماعية والدينية، ويتتبع مراحل تشكل الحركة البروتستانتية خطوة بخطوة، مع كل ما رافقها من انعكاسات وتداعيات على امتداد القارة الأوروبية بأكملها، ويبرع خصوصا في ملاحقة كواليس الكرسي البابوي تحديدا ما كان بشأن صكوك الغفران ذائعة الصيت، على الرغم من أن الكاتب غير بروتستانتي، فلا يمكن للقارئ إلا أن يعجب بنزاهة وحياد الشهادة التوثيقية التي جاء بها في كتابه.
