يتضح من كتب التراث أن التأليف في العشق وأهله لم يكن حكرا على أهل الأدب والشعر. بل إن العلماء والفقهاء مالوا إلى هذا النوع من التأليف ليكون استراحة تأنس بها أنفسهم وتتلذذ بها أرواحهم. ومن هؤلاء الطبيب داوود الأنطاكي صاحب كتاب \"تزيين الأسواق\" إذ يعد كتابه تاريخا لأدب العشاق، استمد المؤلف مادته من مصادر كثيرة، ذكرها في ثنايا كتابه. ويحفل الكتاب بنظرات نقدية وبلاغية إلى جانب الشروح اللغوية فجمع جيد القول وهزله، وظرائف نكت العشق وأهله، ودقيق اللفظ وجزله.
