بزغ نجم (أحمد أبو خليل القباني) كرائد للمسرح العربي في القرن التاسع عشر، وكثرت عنه الكتابات التي تنسب له الفضل في وضع أساسات المسرح بأنواعه، وركزت تلك الكتابات على جهوده بشكل عام، بينما لم يتطرق أحد إلى جهوده في مصر تحديدا، وفي هذا الكتاب يسلط الدكتور (سيد علي إسماعيل) الضوء على نشاط (القباني) المسرحي المتميز في مصر ؛ ليقدم لنا نوعا فريدا من أنواع التوثيق الشامل، موضحا تأثير (القباني) الفني العميق في تأسيس الحركة المسرحية المصرية، ولم يكتف المؤلف بذلك، بل جمع في كتابه معظم ما تم نشره عن (القباني) في الصحف المصرية منذ اللحظة التي جاء فيها إلى مصر، بالإضافة إلى نشر مجموعة مختارة من مسرحياته المطبوعة النادرة بالنص التراثي ذاته الذي طبعت به أول مرة.
