يعد فن السخرية في الأدب من الموضوعات الطريفة التي يروح بها الأديب عن نفسه وعن مجتمعه. وغرضه من ذلك هو النقد أولا والضحاك ثانيا. كان العرب يحبون الضحك ويهشون للضاحكين، فسموا أبناءهم بضحاك وبسام، وطلق، وطليق، وبشر، وبشير، وجذلان، وفرحان. وكانوا يمدحون الرجل بانه ضحوك السن، بسام الثنيات، هش إلى الضيوف، وإذا ذموا الرجل قالوا : هو عبوس، وهو كالح، وهو قطوب، وهو شتيم المحيا، وهو مكفهر، وهو كريه، ومقبض الوجه، وحامض الوجه، وكأنما وجهه بالخل منضوح وكأنه اسعط خيشومه بالخردل. وقد نضجت الفكاهة والسخرية العربية في العصر العباسي وما كان لها أن تنضج إلا في هذا العصر، عصر الترف والقوة والاستمتاع بالحياة الصاخبة، إذا توافر لها للفكاهة ما تحتاج إليه من مال وجواز وترخيص.
